Barriers to nursing practice come in many forms—from very conservative licensing laws and regulations to overly restrictive or even biased employment policies. A casual conversation with a faculty member at a national nursing conference brought my attention to a different kind of barrier. She shared the account of a nursing student who became paraplegic after being injured in his senior year. His school informed him that he could not complete his nursing education program because he would not be able to function as a nurse. The injury not only robbed this student of the ability to walk but also barred him from becoming a nurse.

This situation is disturbing on several fronts. Compare this student's experience to that of a physician I knew who also sustained trauma-induced paraplegia. In his case, his injury occurred before he applied to medical school. The medical school accepted him anyway. He ultimately graduated, completed his medical residency, and went on to specialize in rehabilitation medicine, a field he understood from the perspective of being disabled. He enjoyed a long career without battling many of the same barriers that the student nurse faced. Why the difference?

Consider what it means to function as a nurse and the traditional way that society, including many nursing professionals, views the role. Job descriptions establish the knowledge, skills, and abilities that applicants and employees need to hold specific positions. Nurses who staff medical-surgical units, for example, are required to have intact physical abilities to meet work demands. But that is not the case for all nursing roles. Numerous nursing positions can accommodate nurses with various physical disabilities. These include onsite or remote nursing roles in telehealth, patient education, telephone triage, case management, behavioral health, informatics, research, leadership, and various roles in industry, to name a few. Nurses are hired for their cognitive abilities, such as their capacities for critical thinking, innovation, teaching, and writing.

The nursing student, as well as experienced nurses who sustain a disability, do have employment options. Those with an advanced nursing education have even greater opportunities, so it is important to consider ongoing professional development as a career “insurance policy” to prepare for what the future might hold. Nursing schools and nursing employers should reconsider dated frameworks that fail to accommodate nurses with disabilities in roles that they can perform given their limitations. This area is ripe for innovation. Nurses are too valuable to lose. It is time to rethink how to enable nurses to continue to make a difference in the lives of others and make nursing more diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible.
