The Netherlands is an easy country to drive through by car. The road network is good, distances are clear and clear traffic rules apply. However, Dutch rules may differ from other countries. We have listed a number of practical matters for you so that you are well prepared for the road.
Driving license B for driving passenger cars up to 3,500 kg
In the Netherlands, with a driving license B, you are authorized to drive a car weighing up to 3,500 kg. Maximum speed for passenger cars
In the Netherlands, you are allowed to drive a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour on most highways during the day (from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.). With the exception of sections where a modified limit of 80 kilometers per hour applies. In the evening and night (from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.), you may drive 120 kilometers per hour or 130 kilometers per hour on some highways. The speed that may be driven on highways is shown on signs along or above the road.
Compulsory seat belt in the Netherlands
The rules regarding the transportation of persons in a passenger car have been tightened in recent years. For example, a passenger may only be transported in an approved seat with a seat belt. In the Netherlands it is obligatory to use a seat belt. The number of approved seats are listed on the car's registration certificate.
Transporting children
Transporting children may differ from the rules that apply to adults. Children smaller than 1.35m must be in an approved and appropriate child restraint system/child seat. Children over 1.35m must use a safety belt, just like adults.
